The Average Salaries of Doctors & Lawyers

With three years of law school and licensure required for lawyers and four years of medical school plus up to eight years of residency required for doctors, both professions earn some of the highest wages of all occupations in the United States, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average salaries of doctors and lawyers are based on years of experience, employer and location.

Doctor Salaries

    The average family doctor salary in the United States was $168,550 as of May 2009, according to the BLS. The majority work in the offices of physicians, where the average income is $174,280. Doctors in general medical and surgical hospitals earn an average of $157,470, while those working in outpatient care centers earn $174,590 on average.

Doctor Salaries by Location

    Doctors living in Arkansas make the highest wages of all states, at an average salary of $206,030, according to the Bureau. Wisconsin ranks second with an average salary of $203,040, followed by Wyoming at $194,680. Utah and Georgia are also high paying states for doctors with salary averages of $191,600 and $188,620 respectively.

Lawyer Salaries

    In the U.S., lawyers earn an average salary of $129,020 as of May 2009, according to the Bureau. The majority of lawyers work in the industry of legal services for an annual income of $136,540 on average. Those working for the local or state government earn less at salary averages of $91,040 and $82,750 respectively, while the federal executive branch pays $127,550 on average per year for lawyers.

Lawyer Salaries by Location

    The Bureau names Washington, D.C. as the nation's highest paying state for lawyers at an average salary of $156,750, followed by New York at $152,710 and Delaware at $152,300. At an average salary of $192,020, the metropolitan area of San Jose, California is the highest paying metropolitan area for lawyers, followed by Santa Rosa, Napa, Madera and San Francisco, California, where salary averages range from $167,130 to $170,860.
