Scholarships for Black Students in Law School
In an effort to increase diversity in the legal profession, a number of scholarship programs have been created to attract academically gifted members of underrepresented populations to the field. For African American law students, there are a number of scholarship programs available that can make obtaining a law degree more affordable.
African American Law Student Fellowship Program
The National Bar Institute sponsors the African American Law Student Fellowship Program, available to full-time African American law students who are preparing to enter their third year of study at an accredited school. The program provides fellowship awards, ranging from $1,000 to $10,000, to select African American law students who demonstrate academic excellence, financial need and a commitment to practicing law in the African American community upon completion of their degree.

Earl Warren Legal Training Program
The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund sponsors the Earl Warren Legal Training Program, which provides scholarships for African American law students. Scholarships of $3,000 are awarded to select students entering their first year of study in an accredited law program. Applicants are selected on the basis of academic achievement, leadership skills, community service and interest in pursuing a career as a civil rights or public interest attorney.

National Black Law Students Association Scholarships
The National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) sponsors four scholarship programs to aid African American law students in furthering their educational goals. Applicants must be current members of the NBLSA to be considered. Individual eligiblity criteria and award amounts vary for each scholarship.

Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles Scholarships
The Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles sponsors scholarship awards for black female law students who plan to practice law in southern California. Applicants must be in their second or third year of study at an accredited law school. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need, service to the community, academic achievement and writing skills. Award amounts vary based on availability of funding.

American Bar Association Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund
The American Bar Association's Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to African American students in their first year of study at an accredited law school. Applicants are considered on the basis of academic merit, financial need, service to the community and previous work experience. The program awards scholarships of up to $15,000 per year to selected students, and the award is renewable for up to three years of study.
