How to Become a Lawyer in Florida

The job of an attorney is a very fulfilling one, and it is not limited to any particular practice area, which many people find appealing. If you want to become an attorney in Florida, you must take the Florida bar examination. The Florida bar exam is a test of minimum competence that covers a great deal of information, and there are a variety of requirements that you must fulfil in order to take it, and ultimately become an attorney.

In Florida, you must graduate from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school in order to sit for the bar exam.

Pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE). Florida requires bar applicants to take the MPRE, which is a multiple choice exam that tests a bar applicant's knowledge of the generally accepted rules of conduct applicable to lawyers based on the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct. A passing score in Florida is 80 or greater. You may take the MPRE in your final year of law school.

Complete the Florida bar exam application. The application for the Florida bar exam requires providing personal information, and supporting documentation, such as a passport-style photograph, official transcripts from law school and any other school you have attended, authorization and release forms, an affidavit that you have read the Rules of Professional Conduct, and any other applicable required documents concerning a criminal or driving history. From this information the Florida Board of Bar Examiners will complete your character and fitness evaluation.

Pass the Florida bar exam. The Florida bar exam consists of two parts: the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE) and the essay exam. The MBE is a day-long multiple choice exam that tests the applicant's knowledge of the common law. The essay exam is a day long essay exam that tests the applicant's knowledge of laws specific to the state of Florida.
