How to Become a Notary Public in Florida State

How to Become a Notary Public in Florida State

Notary public applications in Florida are approved by the state after applicants go through a series of steps to become qualified. Notaries administer oaths, certify photocopies of documents and perform marriages, among other tasks. A notary must be a Florida resident, at least 18 years old and a U.S. citizen (or have a Declaration of Domicile recorded at your local courthouse). While being a notary won't provide a full-time income, it may help you perform certain duties in your profession and add to your qualifications when applying for a job.

Instructions

    1

Request an application packet either by mail or online from one of the approved bonding companies in Florida. A list of the approved companies can be found on the governor's website (see Resources). Many of the companies walk you through the complete process. The cost is usually less than $100, but it varies, so shop around.

    2

Complete a three-hour course on duties and responsibilities of a notary public, as required by state law. The class can be done online, but some vendors offer an in-person class. A list of approved notary education companies can be found on the governor's website. You'll notice that some vendors are on both lists.

    3

Mail your application, certificate of course completion and payment to the bonding company you selected. The bonding company will forward the application information and proof of education to the Florida Secretary of State's office, which will approve and issue your commission to the notary bonding company. The bonding company will then send you the notary seal, certificate and plaque, signifying you're ready to perform functions of a notary public. The entire process should take about two or three weeks.
