How to Become Business & Corporate Lawyers

Business and corporate lawyers represent and advise clients in all types of business transactions, including formation of a business or corporation, compliance with legal reporting requirements, advice on corporate mergers and acquisitions and the review and negotiation of contracts. Business and corporate lawyers can work for law firms that specialize in corporate law or as in-house counsel for a particular business or organization.

Get a college degree. Many prospective business and corporate lawyers supplement their pre-law majors with classes in business administration, business management or finance to provide a good foundation for pursuing a career in business and corporate law.

Attend law school. Choose a school with a strong focus on business and corporate law. Take as many business, finance and corporate law classes as you can in addition to your core requirements.

Build up your resume. Make yourself more attractive to future business and corporate law employers by building a resume showing your interest and experience in the business law field. Apply for internships at businesses and in corporate legal departments. Write articles and papers on business and corporate law issues for your law school's law review or journal.

Pass the bar exam. After law school, take the bar exam in the state in which you want to practice business and corporate law. Almost all states require that lawyers pass a bar exam before they can receive a license to practice in the state.

Apply to corporate law firms or legal departments. Now that you are a lawyer, all it takes to become a business or corporate lawyer is to find a job in that field. Apply to law firms with a strong business and corporate law practice. Consider in-house counsel positions at legal departments of corporations if you would prefer working for one client instead of many.
