How to Become a Notary in Indiana

As an Indiana notary public, you are authorized to witness the signing of legal documents, administer oaths and provide affirmations on behalf of the state. In order to become a notary public, you must be 18 years of age or older and a legal citizen of Indiana. Once you receive approval to be a notary public, your commission will remain active for eight years. After that time, you must reapply.

Instructions

    1

Visit the Notary Department for the Indiana Secretary of State or your local Circuit Court. The Secretary Of State's office is located at the following address:

    Notary Department

    Secretary of State's Office

    Room 201 State House

    Indianapolis, Indiana 46204

    2

Complete a notary public application. This application can be obtained during your visit or you can download and print it in advance via the Indiana Secretary of State website.

    3

Take your Notarial Oath form to the appointed Secretary of State officer. Recite and sign the oath in the presence of the officer. The officer will place his official seal on the oath form and present the form back to you.

    4

Secure a $5,000 freehold or corporate security bond. This corporate security bond can be purchased from a local bonding/insurance company.

    5

Submit your application, signed notarial oath, proof of bond and $5 processing fee and a self-addressed stamp envelope to the Secretary of State's office. You will receive your commission in the mail.

    6

Purchase a Notary Public seal press. The press must include the words "Notary Public," "Seal," and "State Of Indiana." There are many online websites that sell state specific notary seal presses. The cost for these presses average between $25 and $60, depending upon the style of press you purchase.
