How to Become a Notary in Louisiana

A notary public is a public servant who witnesses the signing of important legal documents and administers oaths, but does not offer legal advice. Each state has its own requirements for appointment. The Louisiana office of the Secretary of State appoints notaries public based on the parish in which they live. Citizens of Louisiana who are at least 18 years old may apply for an appointment.

Open the Louisiana Secretary of State website and click on the sidebar, "Notary." Click on "How to Become a Notary" on the drop-down menu. Click on the red text, "Application to Qualify," to open a pdf copy of the application.

Print and fill out the entire application, but do not sign it. According to the Louisiana Secretary of State website, the application asks you to confirm your moral character and integrity, your residency in the state, your age and verify you are registered to vote in the parish for which you are applying. Take the completed form to a notary public to sign and have the document notarized.

Unless you have your license to practice law in Louisiana, or already are commissioned as a notary public and are changing parishes, you must take the state notary examination. According to the Secretary of State website, the examination is administered on the first Saturdays in June and December. On the Louisiana Secretary of State website, click on the red link, "Examination Registration Form." Print and fill out the form.

Mail, fax or e-mail both your application to qualify and examination registration forms to the office of the Secretary of State, along with the $25 application fee and the $75 examination fee. All documents and fees must be received at least 45 days before the exam.

Study for the exam. Louisiana law does not require you to take a course, but recommends doing so or joining a study group. The official study guide for the exam, "The Fundamentals of Louisiana Notarial Law and Practice," costs $90 and may be ordered by mail, fax, or e-mail. Click on the red link, "Notary Public Study Guide Order Form" and print, fill out, and send it in.

Take the examination on your scheduled date. If you pass, you will receive notification of your appointment as a Louisiana notary public.
