How to Train as a Public Defender Investigator

How to Train as a Public Defender Investigator

Training to become an investigator for a public defender demands perseverance, dedication, and research. There is no one course of action, and the training required could vary from state to state or even county to county. Becoming a public defender investigator doesn't require a state license, like a private investigator, but some public defenders will only hire someone with previous law-enforcement experience. Some want an investigator with a two- or four-year degree, either in criminal justice or in one of the social sciences, such as sociology. It could take a minimum two years of training before you are considered ready to be an investigator. The job itself is rewarding, as public defender investigators provide a critical function in the preparation of a criminal defense case.

Instructions

    1

Call the public defender's office of the jurisdiction you want to work in to find out its requirements for hiring an investigator. Ask if they have a training or internship program, and how to qualify. If your state or county doesn't have a public-defender's office, find out from the district court which local attorneys provide these services.

    2

Enroll in a local two-year or four-year college, or check into online universities that offer classes in criminal justice or forensic sciences. Look for classes in criminal law, introduction to law enforcement, evidence and procedural law, and criminal investigations. Get a degree if the PD's office in your jurisdiction requires one.

    3

Research industry groups for training and education programs, such as The Criminal Defense Investigation Training Council (defenseinvestigator.com), Criminal Defense Investigators Alliance (cdia.org), National Association of Legal Investigators (nalionline.org), and National Defender Investigator Association (ndia.net). Attend their seminars and conferences to further your education. Enroll in a certification program, which offers specific training for defense investigations.

    4

Ensure you have good computer research and written and oral communication skills. Enroll in local adult-education classes at your local library or school district if you need brushing up; if you are attending a two- or four-year college, take classes in computer science and communication there.

    5

Find a mentor. Call working investigators and ask if you can work with them as an apprentice. Network at conferences and at college to see if anyone knows anyone willing to help in your training.
