What Education Is Needed to Become an Attorney?
An attorney provides advice or counsel to clients on legal rights and the law. A lawyer can specialize in areas of the law such as corporate, criminal, environmental or government. An attorney must go through approximately seven years of education after high school to pass the examination and meet state requirements to practice law.
Undergraduate Degree
The undergraduate degree for admission to law school should consist of courses that help the student develop skills in research, writing and analyzing information. Courses in English, government, public speaking, philosophy, history and computer studies benefit a future attorney. Students seeking a career as a tax attorney may focus on accounting courses and those who plan to represent clients in patent cases may study science or engineering to prepare for work.
Admission to Law School
Future lawyers must take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) to qualify to enter a law school approved by the American Bar Association. In addition to the score on the LSAT, the grades in undergraduate studies are considered when students apply to law school.
Law School
Students in law school study a broad range of topics in the first year or two of their education. These include contracts, constitutional law, legal writing and civil procedures. In the final year of the three-year education, law students begin to specialize in particular areas of the law such as tax or corporate law. The degree the students achieve after completing law school is a Juris Doctor or J.D. degree.
Advanced Degree
Lawyers can seek an additional degree after law school for public administration or research careers. Students sometimes seek to complete advanced degrees while in law school, requiring an additional year of study.
Continuing Education
Lawyers who are licensed by a state after successfully passing the state bar exam are mandated to complete continuing education courses to maintain the license to practice. The requirement for continuing education ensures that lawyers are kept abreast of the field of law and changes in legislation that occur.
