What Is the Salary of a Patent Attorney?

Patent attorneys work with individuals and companies to protect intellectual property. Patents are used for products, technology and processes. When you develop a new product or have an idea of how something can be improved, a patent attorney helps you file the appropriate paperwork with the United States Patent and Trademark Office to prevent other people from stealing your idea.

Education

The minimum education to become a patent attorney is a bachelor's degree and completing law school. Once you finish law school, you have to pass the bar exam. To practice patent law, you are also required to be licensed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Salary

According to Salary.com, the average salary for a patent attorney with 15 years of experience is $205,956 as of March 2011. San Francisco patent attorneys at the same experience level averaged over $250,000, while the median salary in Austin, Texas, was $200,107. New York City patent attorneys had an average salary of $243,440 for the same period.

Job Experience

If you have less than 15 years' job experience, you can expect a lower compensation level. Salary.com projected that patent attorneys with one to two years of experience would start around $214,796 in New York, $176,562 in Austin, Texas, and $221,117 in San Francisco. The size of the firm will also have an impact on your salary.

Where You Work

Laws.com reports that the majority of licensed patent attorneys are located in California, Texas and New York. While you may find patent attorneys in other areas of the country, the highly-specialized nature of this area of law creates higher demand in areas where more products and technology are developed.
