How to Find a Pro Bono Bankruptcy Lawyer

Pro bono legal services are those that lawyers and other legal professionals provide free for the public good, according to the National Federation of Paralegal Associations, a trade group. Lawyers and paralegals provide legal services in a range of areas -- including bankruptcy -- to low-income individuals, charities, nonprofit groups or public organizations that focus on helping citizens with limited resources. Rely on three types of resources to find a pro bono bankruptcy lawyer.

Instructions

    1

Use resources developed by bankruptcy nonprofits. Nonprofit groups like the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI) publish directories and tools to help you find a pro bono bankruptcy lawyer. A clickable map allows you to view organizations in your state that provide free legal services for residents filing for bankruptcy protection; the ABI directory also provides full contact information and links to websites for nonprofits in your state that can provide free bankruptcy help.

    2

Search through state and national professional legal organizations. State bar associations provide information on pro bono bankruptcy services, as well as legal referral services. Check your state bar association's website for information on free bankruptcy help, or connect with its legal referral service by calling or emailing headquarters staff. Many state bar associations also partner with other nonprofits to provide free bankruptcy advice and services -- ask your state bar association's staff if it participates in such programming. The American Bar Association (ABA) offers a specific portal that will help you find free legal help for your bankruptcy filing. Select your state from the ABA's clickable map, or choose your state from a drop-down menu. The ABA includes information on finding pro bono services in search results for every state. Organizations that represent paralegals, such as the National Federation of Paralegal Associations, also offer pro bono directories and guides to find free help for your bankruptcy petition from the paralegals and lawyers with whom they work.

    3

Explore resources offered by local bankruptcy courts. Most federal bankruptcy courts offer access to free legal advice and help for citizens filing for bankruptcy protection. Connect with your nearby federal bankruptcy court -- either through a visit to its website or by calling the court clerk's office -- to determine what services are available to you. Some courts hold legal clinics where you can get free legal help with your bankruptcy petition; others publish directories and hold regular office hours for walk-in appointments.
