Jobs With an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice

Jobs With an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice

An associate's degree in criminal justice can be a key element on your resume. According to the book "The College Board Book of Majors: 2nd Edition," an associate's degree in criminal justice represents "the scientific study and application of law and natural sciences to the social phenomena of crime and delinquency." The education website "Degree Directory" reports students interested in pursuing this degree will take courses in general psychology, legal ethics and criminal law before graduating and moving on to a career in one of multiple fields.

Law Enforcement

An associate's degree in criminal justice can launch a career as a police officer, sheriff's deputy or highway patrol officer. While many jurisdictions do not require their law enforcement officers to hold any type of degree beyond a high school diploma, the website "Legal Criminal Justice Schools" reports that an associate's degree in criminal justice is becoming a prerequisite in many departments nationwide. An associate's degree can also be the first step to obtaining a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, which is required to work as a federal law enforcement officer, such as an FBI or DEA agent.

Paralegal

Learning the ins and outs of how the law works through an associate's degree in criminal justice can lead to a career as a paralegal. These individuals -- sometimes called legal assistants -- provide non-secretarial assistance to their employers, who are typically lawyers or judges, and have received specialized training. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates jobs in this field will increase by 28 percent by 2018.

Private Security Officers And Investigators

Unlike police officers and sheriff's deputies, private security officers and detectives are not sworn law enforcement officers, meaning they do not have the right to arrest an individual. Private security officers can provide a key role in safeguarding people or property, while private investigators -- called "P.I.s" for short can conduct investigations of a non-criminal entity. P.I.s collect background information through their investigations, which can be used in divorce and child custody cases. Because these investigators -- unlike police detectives -- are not sworn officers, they do not have the power of the law behind them, meaning they cannot interrogate individuals or use legal documents like warrants to conduct their work.

Probation Officers And Counselors

These individuals work in conjunction with the court of law to provide services that aid in the legal process. A probation officer monitors convicted criminals who are released from jail or prison. Counselors -- including guardian ad litems or substance abuse workers -- can act as advocates for people caught up in the legal system by providing them with advice about the system itself as well as helping them avoid jail time by showing them how to change their habits. Jobs in these career fields typically require at least an associate's degree in a field like criminal justice, but some may require a bachelor's degree as well.
