How to Get a Notary Public License
A notary public is a public official who is legally authorized to administer oaths and acknowledge affidavits or other sworn statements submitted by an individual or organization. Contrary to popular belief, a notary is not permitted to practice law, although many attorneys are notaries. Each state has its own set of requirements and laws governing the appointment and performance of notaries. Depending on the state, a Notary may be appointed by either the local courts, the governor or the secretary of state. Length of commission terms vary accordingly.
The tips below offer general insight on becoming a commissioned notary public. Check with your state officials for more detailed information, including fees and exam dates.

Meet the eligibility requirements. Most states require, at a minimum, that you are 18 years of age or older; that you reside or work in the state; and that you have no felonies.
2Determine whether you wish to apply directly to the local government or through an organization such as the National Notary Association (find a link in the Resources section). Submit your application and pay the required fees to get the process started.
3Complete all training and pass the state exam, if required. Training may be completed online for a fee in most instances. You will be asked to provide proof of completion for all prerequisites prior to being commissioned.
4Wait for notification from the approving authority (usually the secretary of state, depending on your jurisdiction or state) that your commission has been approved. Purchase your supplies--notary stamp/seal, registry/record book, handbook/guide, notary bond--once you receive your official commission paperwork in the mail.
5Take the oath of office in the presence of a fellow notary or other individual who is authorized to administer oaths and sign affidavits. File the necessary paperwork with your county clerk's office, as instructed, and make sure to keep copies for your file. You may have to forward copies of all paperwork to the approving authority once it has been filed/recorded at the courthouse. Don't be afraid to ask for guidance.
