How to Become a Notary in Washington State
In Washington, as in other states, notaries public witness signatures and administer oaths. You do not have to take any special training or classes to become a notary in Washington state. However, you are responsible for knowing and following the applicable rules and laws. If you wish, you can take an online notary training course offered by the National Notary Association or a similar provider. Appointment as a notary public in Washington is for four years and is renewable.

Ascertain whether or not you are eligible to become a notary in Washington state. You must be at least 18 years old and a state resident. Alternatively, if you are a resident or Idaho or Oregon but work or do business in Washington, you may become a notary. Finally, you must be able to read and write English.
2Download and complete the notary public application (see Resources). You need the names and contact information of three persons who will recommend you and who are Washington residents. The application must be notarized and you must take the notary oath in the presence of the notary public before submitting your application.
3Purchase a $10,000 surety bond from a bonding company or insurance company. The surety bond must cover the entire four years of your term. Include a copy of the bond with your application.
4Mail the application and copy of the bond along with your filing fee ($30 in 2010) to the address on the application. The check or money order should be made out to the Washington State Treasury. Once your application is processed and approved, your notary certificate will be mailed to you.
5Purchase a notary seal/stamp. You cannot buy a seal/stamp until you receive your notary certificate. Seal stamps must be used anytime you notarize a document. A seal/stamp can be purchased from local or online notary supply vendors. Cost varies, but inexpensive seal/stamps are available for under $20.
