Legal Help for Low-Income Women in Washington

Legal aid programs in Washington typically do not provide services specifically for women. However, women can get the help they need through legal aid agencies that provide services for all low-income residents. Services offered in Washington work within a statewide network, which includes the Washington State Bar Association, Northwest Justice Project, Alliance for Equal Justice and the Washington courts. Organizations within the network offer help in a variety of legal areas, including family, health care, public assistance and housing law.

Washington State Bar Association

The Washington State Bar Association offers a number of services for individuals who need legal help. The organization provides a lawyer directory on its website, which enables users to search for attorneys according to location and practice areas, such as family, housing, insurance or health law. The association's website also includes contact information for lawyer referral services throughout Washington. The Bar sponsors the Moderate Means Program, which refers low- to moderate-income people to attorneys who provide legal assistance for reduced fees. The association's Home Foreclosure Legal Aid Project enables homeowners facing foreclosure to receive legal assistance from volunteer attorneys.

Washington Law Help

The Northwest Justice Project, in association with the Washington courts and the Alliance for Equal Justice, operates the Washington Law Help website. The site enables users to find legal service providers that offer free help for senior citizens and low-income Washington residents. Legal service providers included on the site offer legal advice or representation in a variety of practice areas, including housing, domestic violence, health, government benefits and family law. Washington Legal Help also provides limited resources for residents who want to represent themselves in court, including information and court forms related to divorce filings and orders of protection.

Northwest Justice Project

The Washington State Office of Civil Legal Aid, created in 2005, funds legal aid programs for low-income Washington residents, which the Northwest Justice Project administers. The Northwest Justice Project maintains 17 offices throughout Washington and provides legal services in areas such as family law, housing, guardianship, health care, Social Security, bankruptcy and foreclosure. According to the Northwest Justice Project, it handles up to 18,000 cases each year.

Clear

The Northwest Justice Project operates the Clear phone service, which enables Washington residents throughout the state to find the legal advice or representation they need. Clear serves as the intake point for low-income and elderly residents who need legal assistance for civil matters. Clear services include advice over the phone or in writing, legal forms and negotiation services to help resolve legal matters. Clear may also refer clients to legal aid agencies within the Alliance for Equal Justice network, which includes volunteer lawyers and organizations throughout the state specializing in areas such as health care, public assistance, housing, juvenile justice and family law. Callers must meet eligibility requirements to receive assistance, but the program typically does not deny services to people 60 years of age and older. King County residents can contact Clear at 206-461-3200, residents outside of King County can call 888-201-1014 and people 60 years of age and older can call 888-387-7111 for assistance.
